Yr Lovely Dead Moon returns to Hot Concept in anticipation of her second LP ‘Don’t Look Now!’ with ‘Sun Dance’, a mesmerizing feat of experimental pop songwriting complete with a stunning interpretation from celebrated Hyperdub artist, aya. ‘Sun Dance’ is also accompanied by a music video performed in the ancient forestry of Brandenburg, Germany, a wildly imaginative and cinematic queer fantasia that reintroduces the visceral philosophy and offbeat humour that spills from Rachel Margetts’ work as Yr Lovely Dead Moon.
Whereas Margetts’ previous, self-titled collection of recordings were written while traversing Europe and participating in numerous DIY scenes, ‘Don’t Look Now!’ was composed and recorded exclusively in Berlin. Here, even during the onset of an international pandemic, the city began to mutate out of shape under pressure from the oppressive forces of modernity; hyper-capitalism, vicious regeneration and political disinformation threaten more than just creativity.
From the blissful first notes of Sun Dance, it’s clear that Yr Lovely Dead Moon can transcend such persistent threats while staring them directly in the eye. A striking piano provides the background for Margetts’ thoughtful lyrics, before a frenetic tangle of IDM, jazz and club influences plunge listeners into a sonic ritual that deviates between tenderness and tension. At the burning heart of Sun Dance, the music of Yr Lovely Dead Moon remains defiantly optimistic.
“I am the majority”, atones Margetts. “I don’t sleep peacefully.”
Following her debut album ‘im hole’ on Hyperdub, one of the most critically-acclaimed LPs of 2021, and a recent, blistering remix of Space Afrika, aya proves a remarkable foil for the original composition of ‘Sun Dance’. Also hailing from the North of England, aya’s restrained and compelling dub turns ‘Sun Dance’ on its head with a chugging take full of unexpected wormholes and glitches, before ultimately, sunlight breaks through.

Yr Lovely Dead Moon is the
ongoing project of writer, singer and producer Rachel Margetts, Margetts’ fluid,
self-taught style
effortlessly spans broken strands of post-punk, musique concrete and prickling electro, while
her own heady poetry is reminiscent of the explosive vocal energy of Anne Clark or the gender
hypnotics of Jenny Hval....more
